NCERT Solutions for Class 10 Maths Chapter 12 Surface Areas and Volumes

NCERT Solutions for Class 10 Maths Chapter 12 Surface Areas and Volumes covers surface areas and volumes of combinations of solids, conversion of one solid into another, and problems on the frustum of a cone.

Overview of Topics & Subtopics (Click to Jump)

1. Surface Area of a Combination of Solids

Short Note:

• When two or more basic solids (cube, cuboid, cylinder, cone, sphere, hemisphere) are combined, the total surface area of the combination is found by adding the exposed curved/flat surface areas of each part — not simply adding their individual total surface areas.

2. Volume of a Combination of Solids

Short Note:

• The volume of a combined solid is found by adding (or subtracting, for hollowed-out solids) the volumes of the individual basic solids that make up the shape.

3. Conversion of Solid from One Shape to Another

Short Note:

• When a solid is recast/converted into another shape, its volume remains constant; this principle is used to find unknown dimensions after melting and recasting.

4. Frustum of a Cone

Short Note:

• A frustum is the part of a cone that remains after its upper part (with a smaller cone) is cut off by a plane parallel to the base.

• For a frustum with radii r1, r2 and height h, slant height l = √[h²+(r1−r2)²]; Volume = ⅓πh(r1²+r2²+r1r2); Curved Surface Area = π(r1+r2)l.

NCERT Textbook Exercise Questions

A solid is in the shape of a cone standing on a hemisphere, with both having radius 1 cm and the height of the cone equal to its radius. Find the volume of the solid.
Answer: Volume = Volume of hemisphere + Volume of cone = ⅔πr³ + ⅓πr²h = ⅔π(1)³ + ⅓π(1)²(1) = ⅔π + ⅓π = π cm³.
A metallic sphere of radius 4.2 cm is melted and recast into the shape of a cylinder of radius 6 cm. Find the height of the cylinder.
Answer: Volume conserved: &frac43;π(4.2)³ = π(6)²h ⇒ h = (4/3)(4.2)³/36 = (4 × 74.088)/(3 × 36) ≈ 2.744 cm.
A cone of height 24 cm and radius of base 6 cm is made up of modelling clay. It is reshaped into a sphere. Find the radius of the sphere.
Answer: Volume conserved: ⅓π(6)²(24) = &frac43;πr³ ⇒ 288 = (4/3)r³ ⇒ r³ = 216 ⇒ r = 6 cm.
A container open at the top is in the form of a frustum of a cone with radii 10 cm and 4 cm, and height 12 cm. Find the capacity (volume) of the container.
Answer: Volume = ⅓πh(r1²+r2²+r1r2) = ⅓ × 22/7 × 12 × (100+16+40) = ⅓ × 22/7 × 12 × 156 ≈ 4݀620.57 cm³ (approx. 4620.57 cm³ using π≈22/7).
