NCERT Solutions for Class 10 Geography Chapter 6 Manufacturing Industries

NCERT Solutions for Class 10 Geography Chapter 6 covers Importance of Manufacturing, Industrial Location, Classification of Industries (Agro-based, Mineral-based), Major Industries, and Industrial Pollution Control.

Overview of Topics & Subtopics (Click to Jump)

1. Importance of Manufacturing & Agglomeration Economies

Short Note:

• Backbone of Development: Manufacturing transforms raw materials into valuable finished goods, modernizes agriculture, reduces dependence on farm income, creates jobs, and boosts foreign exchange via exports.

• Agglomeration Economies: Many industries tend to come together in urban centers to take advantage of the urban infrastructure (banking, transport, labor, power supply) offered by cities.

2. Agro-Based Industries (Textile, Sugar)

Short Note:

• Textile Industry: Unique industry that is self-reliant and complete in the value chain (from raw material to highest value added products). Cotton textiles localized in Maharashtra and Gujarat due to availability of raw cotton, humid climate, and market.

• Jute Industry: Concentrated in the Hugli basin (West Bengal) due to proximity of jute producing areas, abundant water for processing, and cheap labor.

• Sugar Industry: Seasonal in nature; shifting towards southern and western states (like Maharashtra) due to higher sucrose content in cane and cooler climate extending crushed season.

3. Mineral-Based Industries (Iron, Steel, Chemical, IT)

Short Note:

• Iron and Steel Industry: Heavy basic industry. Ideal location is near coal, iron ore, and limestone sites (Chota Nagpur Plateau region).

• Chemical & Fertilizer Industries: Organic and inorganic chemicals widely used in agriculture and pharmaceuticals.

• Information Technology (IT) & Electronics: Bengaluru is known as the Electronic Capital of India. Creates large employment opportunities, especially for female workforce.

4. Industrial Pollution & Environmental Degradation

Short Note:

• Types of Pollution: Air (smoke, toxic gases), Water (industrial effluents), Thermal (hot water drained into rivers), and Noise pollution.

• Control Measures: Minimizing water usage by reusing and recycling, harvesting rainwater, treating hot water and industrial effluents before discharging into rivers, fitting smoke stacks with electrostatic precipitators, and silencers on machinery.

Intext & Conceptual Questions

Q1: Why is the Jute industry concentrated around the Hugli river basin in West Bengal?
1. Proximity to major jute-growing regions in West Bengal.
2. Inexpensive water transport along the Hugli river network.
3. Abundant water supply required for soaking and processing raw jute fibre.
Q2: Why are sugar mills shifting from North India to Southern and Western states like Maharashtra?
1. Sugarcane grown in southern regions has a higher sucrose content, resulting in better sugar yield.
2. The cooler climate in these regions provides a longer crushing season.
3. Cooperative societies are more successful and organized in these states.

Textbook Chapter End Exercise Questions

Q1: Explain how manufacturing industries contribute to the national economy.
Answer:
1. Modernizes agriculture by providing machinery, tools, and fertilizers.
2. Reduces reliance on agricultural income by generating jobs in secondary and tertiary sectors.
3. Boosts foreign exchange earnings through the export of manufactured products.
4. Reduces regional disparities by establishing industries in backward and tribal areas.
Q2: Why is the Iron and Steel industry called a basic and heavy industry?
Answer:
1. Basic Industry: All other industries (heavy, medium, and light) depend on it for their machinery, equipment, and structural tools.
2. Heavy Industry: Both the raw materials used (iron ore, coking coal, limestone) and the final finished products are bulky and heavy, entailing high transportation costs.
Q3: Suggest four measures to control environmental degradation caused by industries.
Answer:
1. Water Conservation: Minimizing water usage by reusing, recycling, and implementing rooftop rainwater harvesting.
2. Effluent Treatment: Treating hot water and toxic liquid effluents in three stages (primary, secondary, tertiary) before releasing them into natural water bodies.
3. Air Pollution Control: Installing electrostatic precipitators, fabric filters, and scrubbers in smoke stacks.
4. Noise Control: Using silencers on industrial generators and redesigning machinery to reduce noise levels.
