NCERT Solutions for Class 12 Mathematics Chapter 11 Three Dimensional Geometry

NCERT Solutions for Class 12 Mathematics Chapter 11 Three Dimensional Geometry covers direction cosines and direction ratios of a line, the equations of a line and a plane in three-dimensional space, and the angle and distance between lines and planes.

Overview of Topics & Subtopics (Click to Jump)

1. Direction Cosines and Direction Ratios

Short Note:

• Direction cosines (l, m, n) of a line are the cosines of the angles it makes with the x, y, and z axes respectively, and always satisfy l² + m² + n² = 1.

• Direction ratios are any numbers proportional to the direction cosines and are often more convenient to use, since they need not be normalized.

2. Equation of a Line in Space

Short Note:

• The equation of a line passing through a given point with known direction ratios can be expressed in vector form, r = a + λb, or in Cartesian (symmetric) form using the coordinates and direction ratios.

• Two lines in space can be checked for intersection, parallelism, or being skew (neither intersecting nor parallel) by comparing their direction ratios and solving their equations simultaneously.

3. Equation of a Plane

Short Note:

• The general Cartesian equation of a plane is Ax + By + Cz + D = 0, where (A, B, C) represents the direction ratios of the normal to the plane.

• The angle between two planes, the distance of a point from a plane, and the angle between a line and a plane can all be determined using the normal vector of the plane(s) involved.

NCERT Textbook Exercise Questions

What are direction cosines, and what relationship do they always satisfy?
Answer: Direction cosines of a line are the cosines of the angles that the line makes with the positive directions of the x, y, and z coordinate axes, usually denoted l, m, and n. These direction cosines always satisfy the relationship l² + m² + n² = 1, since they essentially represent the components of a unit vector along the direction of the line.
Write the vector and Cartesian equations of a line passing through a given point with given direction ratios.
Answer: If a line passes through a point with position vector a = x1i + y1j + z1k and has direction ratios (b1, b2, b3), its vector equation is r = a + λ(b1i + b2j + b3k), where λ is a scalar parameter. The corresponding Cartesian (symmetric) form of the equation is (x - x1)/b1 = (y - y1)/b2 = (z - z1)/b3.
How can you determine whether two lines in space are skew lines?
Answer: Two lines are classified as skew lines if they are neither parallel (their direction ratios are not proportional) nor intersecting (there is no common point satisfying both line equations simultaneously). This situation can only arise in three or more dimensions, since in two dimensions, any two non-parallel lines must intersect.
What information about a plane can be obtained from its Cartesian equation Ax + By + Cz + D = 0?
Answer: The coefficients A, B, and C in the plane's equation directly give the direction ratios of the normal vector to the plane. This normal vector is essential for determining the angle between two planes, the angle between a line and a plane, and the perpendicular distance of any given point from the plane.
